Unlike most of Marcia’s books, The Courtyard covers only a very few places.
Exeter, Devon
County town of Devon. There has been a community here from ancient times. It was the most westerly fortification to be built by the Romans who called it Isca.
Nethercombe
The fictional estate owned by Henry Morley situated to the north west of South Brent on the souther fringe of Dartmoor.
Porlock Wier, Exmoor
The mention of Porlock Wier in this book is the first time that Marcia took a character on to Exmoor. With its tiny harbour, Porlock Wier (situated at SS 864 479) is a wonderful place for walkers who wish to explore Exmoor’s coast.
Rattery, Devon
A small village tucked away at SX 740 616 where, among other things, you will find an excellent pub.
Royal Castle, The,
Hotel in Dartmouth overlooking the Boatfloat at SX 877 513. The last time my father and I had a drink together before he died it was in The Royal Castle. Click here for their web site.
South Brent, Devon.
Village on the southern edge of Dartmoor at SX 698 901.
Totnes, Devon
A town at SX 805 605. There has been a bridge at Totnes from before the Norman invasion and it is still the first to cross the River Dart. As such, it was of great military importance and a walled town, protected by a castle, was the result. More.
Wotter, Dartmoor
A small hamlet on the moor at SX 557 622 through which Guy drove when trying to catch up with Gemma
