Drive into Princetown from Tavistock or Yelverton and you will see a pair of cottages one on either side of the road. These were used by prison warders whose job it was to close the road when the prison bell was rung to warn of an escape.

The highest inhabited community on Dartmoor, the town is far less dependent on the prison for employment than it was. Although many now commute to work, there is a brewery here (where they produce Jail Ale sold in many local hostelries including the Bedford in Tavistock) and . . .
. . . the Duchy Centre for Creativity which is housed in the brand new building to the right. The do far too much there to explain but if arts and culture are your thing, click here to see their web site.
